The alarm clock buzzes at 6:00a.m. as it does every weekday. Paul rolls over in his bed and turns it off and swings his feet off the bed to put his spider-man slippers on. Paul walks half awake into his bathroom to shave his face and brush his teeth. After Paul has cleaned himself up a bit, he runs out the door with his briefcase and tie ready to conquer the world. Paul rounds the corner and stumbles into the local Starbucks to grab a cup of coffee. Paul knows that if he doesn’t get his coffee he will not perform to his fullest at work. Paul picks up his regular cup of coffee as he does everyday. He scurries out the door and is on his way to the office. As Paul scurries around the corner to get to the skyscraper that he works at he realizes that he is going to be late. He heads for the shortcut down the alley and amazingly arrives on time yet once again. He heads for the elevators and calls to the crowd standing inside to hold the door open. He barely squeezes through the door and makes it to the 48th floor just in the nick of time. Paul runs down the hallway while not forgetting to greet all of his co-workers. Paul spots his cubicle out of the corner of his eye. He sits in the middle of the office in his little box and pushes papers everyday. The phone rings and Paul ruffles through his papers trying to find it. He finally manages to pick up the phone only to realize that he is wanted in the office. Paul hangs up the phone and takes his time walking toward the big wooden door at the end of the hallway. He counts the tiles on the floor as he makes his long journey to what may be his last. Paul opens the door and is surprised to see his boss sitting behind his desk with a big smile on his face. Paul pulls up a chair nervously and awaits his boss’ first words. As to Paul’s surprise his boss tells him that he is getting a raise and is being moved up to a new position. Paul is happy and sad at the same time. Paul knows that by taking this offer it is helping him for the best but is sad because he doesn’t get to work with all of his friends anymore. He is also sad because instead of the 48th floor he now has to go to the 172nd floor. Paul thanks his boss and walks out of his office and back down the hallway to his cubicle. He gathers his stuff and says his final goodbyes to all of his friends. Paul tells them that he will try and stop by every now and then to say hi. Paul jumps onto the elevator and travels up a few floors until he is at his new office. He now has an office that overlooks the entire city of St. Charles. He misses all of his friends and wants to move back down to his original cubicle and be with them. Paul soon makes new friends and has become popular with all the ladies. Paul manages to stop by and talk to his old friends a few times a week and reminisces about old times they had together. Paul still gets up at the same time each day. He puts on his slippers and shaves and brushes his teeth each day. He still goes to the same coffee shop and gets the same cup of coffee. The only thing that has changed is the fact that he is later to work each day because of the extra elevator time. Each week Paul manages to get called into his boss’ office for something different. One day at work Paul got called into his new boss’ office and he figured he was moving again. Well, Paul was right, he is moving, except he is moving back down instead of up. Paul is now back on the same floor with his friends. A party is thrown in Paul’s re-arrival. Next Monday rolls around and Paul is back into his routine. He is no longer late and is happy to see all of the familiar faces around him. Paul knows that the 48th floor is his and that is where he was born to be. No one knows city-slicken as good as Paul. In fact, he is the definition of a city-slicker.
